Watching Interstellar in 2026

I went to film school and I claim myself as a moviegoer. However, I had never watched Interstellar by Christopher Nolan until a couple of days ago. Yes, I know.

I always saw the clips and always heard the awesome Hans Zimmer music, but I somehow managed to avoid it until this year. I watched it on a Monday morning and that was a mistake. Do not watch this on a Monday morning. The movie is emotionally loaded and it was such a tough watch in a good way. I also did not know this movie is 11 years old. It holds up so well since it takes place in the future, but also the story is about family and love which are universal and everlasting themes.

The visuals keep up as well. It is shot on 35mm and 70mm IMAX film. DP Hoyte van Hoytema ASC did such an amazing job as always, and the lighting is so authentic and believable for a sci-fi movie that takes place in space. The scale of the movie is big and IMAX and wide format anamorphic definitely helped shape that world.

While it is visually stunning, I do think the story being focused on something really personal like the relationship between a father and his children did the trick to keep the film's backbone straight and compelling. Science and space are cool, but make a grown adult cry over a dad and his daughter and you have something special.

It was a great first watch and I am officially joining the Interstellar fan club. Late, but I made it.

Have you watched this film? Please recommend me any films that give a similar vibe to Interstellar!
